What you should know about the Megaformer workout
If you're into Pilates, you've probably come across the term Lagree sooner or later – usually in connection with sweaty workouts on a futuristic-looking machine called the Megaformer . But what exactly is Lagree? Is it Pilates 2.0? Or something completely different?
In this article we explain what Lagree is about, who it is suitable for and what the differences are to classical Pilates.
What is Lagree?
Lagree is a training concept developed by Sébastien Lagree that combines elements of Pilates, strength training, endurance, balance and core stability – on a special device: the Megaformer .
The goal?
A high-intensity, yet joint-friendly full-body workout that makes muscles burn within 40 minutes while simultaneously targeting the deep muscles.
The Megaformer – the heart of Lagree
The Megaformer looks like a futuristic reformer, but is designed to be significantly more intensive . It has:
-
Slide with spring resistance
-
Handles, platforms & loops
-
Adjustable spring tension for individually dosed load
This allows for fluid, controlled movements with high muscle stimulation – particularly effective for legs, abdomen and buttocks .
Lagree vs. Pilates – the differences
Although Lagree is often confused with Pilates, there are significant differences :
| feature | Pilates | Lagree |
|---|---|---|
| Device | Reformer, Mat, Chair | Megaformer |
| tempo | Calm, controlled | Slow but intense & nonstop |
| focus | Stability, posture, breathing | Muscle burning, strength, endurance |
| Training goal | Body awareness & mobility | Body toning & fat burning |
| Recovery phases | Yes | Barely |
In short: Lagree feels like Pilates on steroids – complete with constant muscle tremors.
Who is Lagree suitable for?
Lagree is ideal if you:
-
you like to train intensively
-
If you want to build muscle and burn fat
-
looking for a new stimulation system
-
You have little time, but want maximum effect
-
if you want to strengthen your deep muscles and balance
Beginners are welcome – many studios offer beginner classes. Important: You don't need any prior experience , but some muscle soreness afterwards is guaranteed.
Where can you make Lagree?
Lagree Studios now exists in many major cities – especially in the USA, Australia, UK and increasingly also in Berlin, Hamburg or Munich .
Since the Megaformer is a special device, you cannot replicate this training at home – unless you invest several thousand euros in your home gym.
Is Lagree better than Pilates?
Both training methods have their place – and they complement each other perfectly .
-
Pilates is suitable for rehabilitation, body control, and prevention.
-
Lagree pushes you to your physical limits and delivers visible change in a short time.
You can combine both formats – e.g. 2× Pilates per week for posture and core , plus 1× Lagree for strength & power .
